With the Anther Distillery sitting across from picturesque Corio Bay and steeped in history, we’re a bit biased saying Geelong is the perfect regional getaway!
Of course, we recommend a getaway to Greater Geelong, the Bellarine and the Great Ocean Road for a week or two to properly explore, but what if you have a weekend to spend in our wonderful town? We’ve put together a stellar 48-hour itinerary to make the most of Geelong and our wonderful surrounds. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy...
FRIDAY
Jump out early and take the Port Philip Ferry if you’re coming in from Melbourne; once you’ve docked, make your way to the R Hotel and check in to your gorgeous modern apartment. Bask in the stunning views from your room overlooking Austin Park, Corio Bay and the Geelong CBD; then watch the sunset at Eastern Beach, just a five-minute stroll away.
Set yourself up at the Continental for dinner, found in Little Malop Street. Inspired by modern European cuisine, our Dr. Derv says, “What they do with cabbage at The Continental needs to be seen to be believed”.
After your tastebud popping experience, post dinner drinks at the 18th Amendment Bar are a must. Throw yourself back to the Prohibition era, immersed in old world, speakeasy charm. Their cocktails are amazing theatrical delights featuring dry ice, smoke bubbles and so much more, we suggest you order a Jitter Bug; and spot the first-batch Anther Gin bottle in the glass cabinet!
SATURDAY
After a restful night’s sleep, get up bright and early and start your journey down to one the of many coastal delights surrounding Geelong. But first – a pit-stop for breakfast! Indulge yourself at That Place Patisserie and Café – you’re going to need the carbs. Offering artisanal pastries, French-inspired sweet treats, and European breakfast and lunch, you’ll have all the energy you need for the Dolphin and Seal Experience – where you can swim with seals!
After lunch, a leisurely stroll through the Geelong Vintage Market might leave your wallet a little lighter – but don’t spend everything. Because you’ll approach the big red chimney at Federal Mills and of course, the cellar door at Anther! Have one of our amazing staff take you on a gin tasting flight before the Anther mixologists whip you something you’ll never forget!
Right next door for dinner is the hottest newest addition to the region’s restaurant scene - our great friends at 1915 Geelong. Head chef Andy Symonakis will take you through a scrumptious Mediterranean-style; and a cocktail menu curated by our very own Nicole Myers. Buon appetito!
SUNDAY
Time to choose your own path (literally) for an early morning adventure and take in some breathtaking waterfalls along the Buckley Falls track or enjoy the scenic overlooks on hike of the iconic YouYangs. Either option will inspire an appetite at the Box Office Café that serve breakfast fare made from locally sourced produce and specialty coffee.
It’s off to the National Wool Museum next – it doesn’t sound exciting but take it from us; you’ll be engrossed by the history and stories you’ll find there.
In the very same building as the Museum, you’ll find Black Sheep Restaurant and their Chamber of Gin (not a Harry Potter story). Here, take part in a tasting of every local gin we can think of – and enjoy a repast of European style cuisine.
As the 48th hour draws near, it’s back to reality as you check out of your luxury room and board the Ferry home. A whirlwind it may have been; but one you’ll never forget!
